Can anyone help me - we can't seem to find a great sales VP. We're a small company in technology with about $10 million in sales. Where do we find them and how do we weed out the BS'ers? I don't want to pay a search firm and my CEO is getting desperate.
What have you done so far? Have you posted the job anywhere?

Good article this morning about using social media for hiring: http://smallbiztrends.com/2010/07/looking-to-hire-fire-up-the-social-networks.html New research shows that 73% of businesses are using social media to recruit candidates and 58% are successfully hiring the candidates they find through those channels.
A couple of thoughts... Use LinkedIn and post the job. I find this pretty helpful. I can see connections and get referrals. Also, I would have all of your Exec get on the phone with who they are networked and start asking around. Call your competitors...you are allowed to pillage the competition assuming no non-soliciting agreements are in place. If you contact their Sales VP maybe they will know someone to refer you to. I think a recruiter/search firm is always worth it. Especially at that level. They really do sift through the BS'ers. You should be able to cut a pretty good deal in this economy.
