A friend of mine who owns his own small business said that his lawyer told him that according to fed regulations, you can't conduct interviews with the door closed any more. Is this true? I've been doing this for years in my own business and can't find any information to confirm/deny... need help!
There is not a law against having a private conversation behind closed doors with employees or potential employees. Someone needs to go back and get clarification from their lawyer. Perhaps there was a reason that the lawyer was "advising" your friend this, but that is not a position to take here. In fact, I would say it would be inappropriate not to close the door. However, make sure you are closing the door for applicants of both genders. Additionally, make sure you are asking the same questions to all the candidates and stay focused on only job related topics. If you are ever questioned, this may demonstrate consistent and professional behavior.

As an owner of a small business and a person that has been through over 25 interviews in my lifetime, I have never interviewed nor been interviewed with a door open. From my understanding, there is not a law against it, but I believe the door being close amongst other things, keeps the candidate comfortable and more relaxed. The thought of knowing that other employees can hear all of my answers to a question would make me really uneasy. Just a thought...
